My Summer Student Experience
As the summer comes to an end, I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for my involvement with Barriston for the past two summers. I will be returning to the University of Ottawa for my last year of law school and I am very grateful for the experiences that Barriston has given me which will assist me in school and my future career.
When I first started at Barriston, I did not know anything about Municipal law. The lawyers and assistants had to teach me from the ground up how to use Teraview, draft agreements and by-laws, prepare litigation documents, and the processes of all of the different Boards and Tribunals. These are things that may not be taught in law school, and I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to learn all of these things with very supportive people to guide me.
The past two summers I have been able to work with some incredible lawyers who truly act as mentors. From drafting documents, to attending hearings, I have been able to really immerse myself in what I am learning in ways that my colleagues at other firms have not had the opportunity. The highlights of my summers include preparing materials for and attending an Environmental Review Tribunal hearing as well as the Board of Negotiation. Both of these experiences gave me a peek into different areas of Municipal law.
I was also provided with the opportunity to correspond with clients and municipal staff directly, so I would like to thank the clients and staff that I have met and worked with for graciously allowing me to sit in and learn.
Thank you to everyone at Barriston for answering my numerous questions and taking me under your wing. With these two summers of experience I know I am prepared for the future opportunities and adventures that come my way.
Thanks for all of your help, Nicole and best of luck with your studies!
